Our Main Senior Pitch will be of top International Standard and will include Floodlights and a Main Stand, it is hoped with time to be in a financial position to have a seated area around the pitch. Our Youth Pitch will, in time, include a seated area for 1,000 pers and be floodlit, it will be the minimum size for senior football, it has an excellent playing surface. With the future development of a coaching and medical centre. http://www.ballymununited.com/bufcwebsite1_002.htm Mon, 06 Sep 2010 00:50:21 GMT Web Easy Professional Avanquest Software http://www.ballymununited.com/bufcwebsite1_002.htm#1 In 1968/69 in Freddie Fleming's apartment on Sillogue Avenue, Ballymun, sat the founder members of our club who came together to address the need for sporting facilities in the new flats complex, Tommy Ronan, Freddie Fleming, Eddie Marshall, John Hamilton, Tommy Ronan was elected the first club secretary that night, the decision was made to form Ballymun United Football Club and enter them into the Athletic Union League. to where they are to this day in 2009, 40 years on and the club has won every major trophy available to an amateur club in Ireland. They played their first games on old farmers land in Poppintree at the time, moving to Balcurris in the 70's, this pitch was to become a fortress to all Mun teams, known as the "San Siro" because of the surrounding flats , the Mun went on to play some exciting games here in front of large local support, it was common to have over 1,000 people watching a junior game on a Sunday afternoon in Balcurris. Some of the early clubmen were Bobby Doyle, Frank Turner, Sean Martin, Brendan McKenna (RIP), Junior Mulligan, Jim Casey, Mick Comiskey, Paddy Ormsby("The Postman"), John Ryan, Jody Carrick (RIP), Jackie Kenny, Joe Bennett, John Ennis, Joe Kenny, Jimmy Dunne, George Chalkley, Noel Godfrey (RIP). Kenny, Ennis and Bennett went on to help form Rivermount Boys, the late Brendan McKenna helped form Neilstown Rangers, the Marshall's went on to become members of Inchicore Athletic, Bobby Doyle became a well respected Match Official. The club became indepted to the staff of the Towers Pub who helped finance the early years, two in particular were George Lonergan (first club President) and Paddy Belton.The Towers is still an integral part of the clubs fundraising efforts. The Mun has had some notable characters down through the years as well as some excellent players, none other then the great Brendan Place (RIP) who was the only Irish centre half to "mark" the great PELE. Between 1999 and 2005 the club had several players on the Irish Junior International Squads, David Conroy, Christy McElligott, the Kane Brothers, Steo Hanna, Gary Burdock, Gary McCormack, Johnny Brown,Keith Bruen, Chris Madden, Chris Hamilton, Derek Moore, Gary Kelly,Ken Coakley (Someone missing? let me know) In the 89/90 season the club reached the latter stages (Qtr-Finals, Sem-Finals, Finals) of every major cup competition in amateur football, in the same year they went on an unbeaten run of 13 games in an attempt to overhaul Portlaoise at the top of the league table. Portlaoise had finished their league campaign four weeks previous and because of the various cup runs we had to play catch up, Portlaoise sat back and watched the Mun Machine get closer and closer, finishing the season in mid June the Mun ran out of steam and finished two points adrift - what a season - what a team. Portlaoise had that season, probably the finest young keeper in amateur football. http://www.ballymununited.com/bufcwebsite1_002.htm Mon, 06 Sep 2010 00:50:21 GMT Web Easy Professional Avanquest Software http://www.ballymununited.com/bufcwebsite1_002.htm#2 In 94/95 under the management of Philip Rooney and David King the second team won the first major senior cup for the Mun, with Gerard Sweeney in terrific goalscoring form along with Theo Dempsey, with Patsy Fannin and Terry Moore in defence nothing got pass them, the excellent Noel Brennan and Rocky Smith in midfield, this was a great footballing side that fought for everything. During the period 96/97 to 99/00 the third team, with many an ageing character and a few good young one's thrown in to do the running, the side managed by Alan George and Marc Rooney dominated the 3rd division and the league cups for 3 years, in fact Alan and Mark became the most succesful managers at the club for their consisitency in bringing home the trophies. Season 96/97 saw the club bring its first major trophy home " the Heineken Cup" was won with a victory over our fierce rivals at the time Portmarnock, a superb lob from the "Gemini Man" Noel Ankers secured a great victory in Tolka Park the side managed by John Godfrey and Reggie George and coached by Noel King were a delight to watch, they reached the Final of the FAI Junior Cup in the season 98/99 only to be robbed by a cruel goal in the replay, Barry "hand ball" Flynn scoring the winner for Fairview Rangers in the last minute, a loss that was hard to accept given the fact that the referee had a nightmare in the first game and did'nt improve any in the replay sending off 3 Mun players for competing to hard, two of these sending off's were the keeper and his replacement. One of the great games in the competition though. Season 2000/2001, started of with manager John Godfrey standing in for Noel Synott who was on holidays, a decent start to the league campaign gave Noel a good foundation to build what was to become an incredible squad of players, captained by the legend that is Christy McElliggott this side went on to dominate every competition they entered, winning all major trophies and capped of by winning the FAI Junior Cup against local rivals St Kevins Boys in Tolka Park in front of over 4,000 spectators, David Kane wrote his name into club folklore by hitting a first half hat-trick , his first indside 10 secs of the kick-off, playing a one- two with his partner in crime Gary Burdock, Davey hit a screamer to leave the Kevins players and management stunned, as one Kevins member stated afterwards "what we needed at that time was a tackle" ! http://www.ballymununited.com/bufcwebsite1_002.htm Mon, 06 Sep 2010 00:50:21 GMT Web Easy Professional Avanquest Software http://www.ballymununited.com/bufcwebsite1_002.htm#3
